ANN ARBOR, MI -- If you’re wondering what the rumbling in the distance is, it’s the horde of students getting ready to descend upon Ann Arbor to start classes at the University of Michigan.

While students have already started taking over university haunts like The Brown Jug or New York Pizza Depot, it’s not too late to grab a bite before they fill spots like Tomukun Korean Barbeque or Angelo’s.

Here are five restaurants to visit before University of Michigan’s move-in days begin on Aug. 24.

Although it may be best known among UM students for its 64-ounce mason jar “fishbowl” drinks, Good Time Charley’s, 1140 S University Ave., also offers a variety of Mexican dishes, sandwiches and burgers.

Options include the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich, featuring homemade barbeque and coleslaw on a brioche bun; the BTB Classic Burrito, with rice, beans and choice of protein; and the Chicken Caesar Wrap with grilled chicken, parmesan and Caesar dressing.

Good Time Charley’s is open from 5 p.m. to midnight Sunday and Monday, 3 p.m. to midnight Tuesday and Wednesday and 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. Find the restaurant online, on social media or by phone at 734-668-8411.

With dishes sized to serve an individual up to nine people, Tomukun Korean Barbeque, 505 E. Liberty St., Suite 200, has something for everyone. Tomukun carries barbeque platters with meats like beef brisket, pork belly and marinated chicken.

It also offers a variety of stir-fry and noodle dishes, including cold buckwheat noodle soup, baby octopus stir-fry and spicy seafood noodle soup.

If a diner sounds appealing, Angelo’s, 1100 Catherine St., has the menu to check out. Angelo’s offerings include smoked salmon benedict, cinnamon-raisin pancakes and a variety of omelets. Angelo’s menu also features hot sandwiches, burgers and Reubens.

Casa Dominick’s, 812 Monroe St., offers a wide range of sandwiches, pasta, salads and soups, as well as pizza, to-go sangria and quesadillas.

Options include ravioli portabelli with cheese, portobellos and basil pesto sauce; an eggplant sandwich with sliced eggplant, parmesan and provolone cheese; and a domarita pizza with basil pesto, fresh mozzarella and tomatoes.

Customers can choose from burger options, like black bean, chorizo and beef. Toppings include a runny egg, bacon and cilantro-lime salsa. Pair the burger with a smoothie featuring fruit and vanilla ice cream, fried plantains, or coconut-ginger rice.
